An eclectic, authentic beach town, Ocean Beach is well known for its fine antique and vintage shopping, casual beach-style and upscale dining, and unique local merchants. Situated on the water, the community boasts one of San Diego’s finest and largest Farmers Markets, the original Dog Beach and the longest concrete pier (measuring 1,971 feet) on the west coast.
Ocean Beach’s cornerstone is Newport Avenue, where merchants hawk their eclectic wares to tourists and local alike. The community lies on the Pacific Ocean at the estuary of the San Diego River. Situated about seven miles from Downtown San Diego, Ocean Beach is directly north of Point Loma. Residents of Ocean Beach often refer to themselves as OBceans (pronounced oh-BEE-shuns).
A pair of developers gave Ocean Beach its name back in the 1800s, and proceeded to lay the foundation for what the community has become today. In the early 20th century, the northern end of Ocean Beach was home to Wonderland Amusement Park, which remained a popular attraction until being washed away in 1916. When streetcars and an extensive public transit system surfaced, the area became largely residential and remains so today.
With waterfront property and views in high demand, Ocean Beach is a popular choice for people looking to enjoy San Diego’s amenities while residing in a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere.
