Loma Portal is a hilly area west of Rosecrans Street and north of Nimitz Blvd., overlooking San Diego Bay. Primarily residential with a business and retail center located on Voltaire Street, Loma Portal is home to the 1.4-acre Plumosa Park and a variety of cultural amenities.
Street lights positioned in the middle of street intersections – instead of on the sidewalks – set Loma Portal apart visually from other Point Loma neighborhoods. The community is well known for its elaborate Christmas decorations every year.
Major north-south roads are Rosecrans Street, Chatsworth Blvd. and Catalina Blvd. The east-west streets form part of what are known as the "alphabetical author streets,” that begin in the adjacent Roseville neighborhood, and are named for authors in alphabetical order.
